The Idolatry of Theology
Despite being aware of their historical failings, the nation of Israel fell into idolatry. This week, Pastor Isaac Cheung underscores that merely learning about sin is inadequate to prevent it. Let us strive to overcome deliberate sin by wholeheartedly loving God.

Life Group Discussion Guide
1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– What spiritual experience (e.g. baptism, communion, a significant prayer moment) has had a profound impact on your faith journey? How has it shaped your relationship with God?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. What are the main points of this section of the book and how do these address the problems in the Corinthian church?
– Why did Paul cite Jewish history/Old Testament stories?
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– In what ways have you prioritized your own desires and appetites over your love for God and others?
– How might you be guilty of spiritual pride, believing your theological knowledge makes you secure in your faith? Have you ever used your spiritual experiences or practices (like baptism or communion) as a shield against self-examination and repentance?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– What practical steps can you take this week to identify and surrender any idols in your life?
– How can you actively combat spiritual pride in your life and remain humble before God and others, ensuring that this love is the driving force behind your actions and decisions?
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Lord for His unwavering faithfulness and the grace that He extends to us. Thank Him for the wisdom and knowledge He provides, and for the reminder that our true security and strength lie not in our own understanding but in the sacrificial love of Christ. Express your gratitude for the spiritual experiences that draw us closer to Him and for the cross that stands as a testament to His boundless love and mercy.
– Repent for the times you have placed your desires and appetites above your love for God and others. Ask for forgiveness for your spiritual pride and the times you have relied on your knowledge and religious practices as a false security. Ask God to help you humble yourself before Him, to recognize your need for His grace, and to surrender completely to His will. Pray that you may love and serve others as He has loved and served us.
