King Herod faced three hurdles, and his failure to overcome them ultimately led to the beheading of John the Baptist. This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung urges us to overcome the hurdles of lust, values, and reputation, lest they lead us to regrets.

1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share a time you considered or decided to do something to preserve what people thought about you/protect your reputation. What happened?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. In your own words, explain the three hurdles that led to King Herod’s downfall.
• What is the difference between listening to God’s Word and obeying God’s Word? How do we see this happening today?
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• Which of the three hurdles (fleshly desires, values, or reputation) is most difficult for you to overcome? Why?
• In what ways do you resist God’s Word even though you enjoy hearing it?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• What’s one practical way you can flee from a current temptation rather than entertain it?
• Who in your life needs to see someone live with integrity rather than people-pleasing and hypocrisy? How will you respond?
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise God for His Truth that cuts through the confusion of this world and leads us to life. Thank Him for His Word that convicts and corrects, and for the grace that transforms our desires, values, and priorities. Give thanks for Jesus, who overcame every temptation and fear—not for His own sake, but so we could walk in freedom, integrity, and bold obedience.
• Repent for the times you allowed your flesh, values, or desire for approval to rule your decisions. Ask God to forgive you for choosing comfort, control, or reputation over righteousness. Confess where your heart has resisted transformation and where your actions have compromised your witness. Pray that God would realign your desires with His and give you the courage to live according to His truth no matter the cost.
