Life is Short

Life is Short

We hope for long, prosperous lives, but Psalm 90 reminds us that our days are few and full of trouble. This Sunday, Rev. Jared Co assures us that, while life may be short, God is always good. With His guidance, we can strive to make each year meaningful.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

  • When you look back on this past year, what is one thing you wish you had spent more time doing?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

  • Read the psalm. How are human sinfulness, God’s righteous wrath, and the brevity of life connected?
  • How can our hope in God help us live meaningfully and make our short lives count for His glory?

4. Examine the heart (15-20 mins)

  • When you think about how short and uncertain life is, what do you feel most deeply? Does the thought of death lead you to fear, avoidance, or a deeper dependence on God?
  • Is God truly your everlasting home and source of hope, or do you find your deepest sense of security in temporary things such as achievements, relationships, possessions, or personal plans? Why?

5. Empower the hands (15-20 mins)

  • What distractions or pursuits have been keeping you from reflecting on your mortality and considering how God wants you to live? What is one practical change you can make this week to spend your time more intentionally on what matters to God and has lasting value?
  • What responsibility, relationship, or God-given opportunity can you approach differently so that your remaining days become more fruitful and bring greater glory to God? Is there a person you can intentionally love, serve, or share the hope of the gospel with while you still have the opportunity?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

  • Praise our Almighty God as our eternal dwelling place amid the brevity, hardships, and uncertainties of life. Thank Him for His love and grace, and for sending Jesus to bear the wrath and consequences of our sins so that we can be reconciled to Him. Rejoice that because of Jesus, death does not have the final word and we can live with lasting hope, knowing that our lives belong to God and can be used for His glory.
  • Repent for the times you have been distracted by temporary things, avoided confronting your sin, and lived as though you had unlimited time. Ask for forgiveness for seeking security apart from God and neglecting the opportunities He has given you to love others and live according to His will. Pray that you may gain a heart of wisdom, turn away from sin, treasure the hope you have in Jesus, and use each day faithfully to glorify God and make your life count for His kingdom.
