主咒詛不結果的無花果樹合理嗎? Is it Reasonable for the Lord to Curse the Fruitless Fig Tree?

Although it was not in season, Jesus was so disappointed that a fig tree was fruitless that He cursed it and it withered the next day. Was it reasonable for Jesus to do this? This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung explores how Jesus connected the fig tree to the purpose of the Temple and how this connection also relates to the role of the church in fulfilling God’s mission.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share an instance where you’ve seen something that looked impressive on the outside but turned out to be empty or disappointing on the inside? What made you realize it?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. What does the fruitless fig tree symbolize? Why does Jesus respond so strongly to it?
• How are the cursing of the fig tree and the clearing of the temple connected in meaning and message?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• In what ways might your life look spiritually “full of leaves” but lacking in real fruit? What specific fruit does God want to grow in your life right now (in character, obedience, or disciple-making)?
• How do you respond when God confronts areas of façade, comfort, or misplaced priorities in your life? What does this reveal?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• How can you realign your current activities, schedules, or commitments so they serve God’s purpose rather than just keeping you busy?
• How can you help ensure that your Life Group, family, or ministry focuses on making disciples rather than merely meeting and running activities?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Heavenly Father for being a faithful and purposeful God who desires true fruit in His people. Thank Him for loving us enough to confront fruitlessness, hypocrisy, and misplaced worship. Express gratitude that He invites us into genuine faith—one that trusts His Word, aligns with His will, and flows from a transformed heart. Thank Him that His desire is not empty activity but a life that bears fruit for His glory and the good of others.
• Repent for the times you have settled for outward appearances, religious activity, or busyness instead of true obedience and fruitfulness. Ask for forgiveness for treating methods, events, or personal desires as more important than God’s purpose and kingdom. Confess the ways you have doubted His Word, prayed with mixed motives, or approached Him with unresolved sin toward others. Ask God to cleanse your heart, realign your faith, and restore you to authentic worship and fruitful living.
