When Defeat Means Victory

Our culture—and our nature—demands that we vigorously defend and assert our rights, but doing so may lead to irreparable damage and lasting scars, especially if we use worldly methods to tackle disputes within the church. This week, Ptr. Jared Co reminds us that losing a dispute with a fellow believer may be how we find victory for Christ.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share a time you were in conflict with a fellow believer. What happened and how was it resolved? What can be learned from this experience?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. In what ways does Paul emphasize the significance of believers’ actions in the public sphere and their impact on the perception of Christian values and principles? In today’s time, what common behaviors do believers have that can negatively affect others?
– How does the concept of “losing to win for the gospel” challenge conventional advice in handling disputes?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– Consider your willingness to forfeit personal advantages or comforts for the sake of resolving conflicts within the church community. How does this challenge your inner attitudes and priorities?
– Evaluate yourself: Do you have any personal biases or preferences that hinder your ability to prioritize gospel-centered resolution of conflicts? What can encourage you to pursue godly conflict resolution?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– In what specific ways can you contribute to creating a culture within your Christian circles that prioritizes internal resolution of conflicts and maintains unity amidst disagreements?
– How can you actively support and encourage fellow believers who may be facing personal risks or vulnerabilities in resolving conflicts within the church community?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Thank God for reminding us of the sacrificial love displayed by Christ on the cross, where defeat ultimately meant victory for the sake of the gospel. Praise Him for the privilege of being called His children and for the inheritance we have in His eternal kingdom. Ask God to help you continually magnify His Name through your life, surrendering your own desires for the sake of His gospel.
– Humbly approach the Lord and acknowledge your tendency to prioritize personal interests over the unity and witness of His Church. Ask for forgiveness for the times when you have sought speedy resolution outside of His body, rather than trusting in His wisdom and guidance. Pray that you may have the courage to risk personal defeat for the sake of His gospel, surrendering your own desires and comforts for the greater purpose of His kingdom.
