Life Group Discussion Guide
1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Think about a time when you were drawn to someone’s charisma or eloquence. How did you discern whether their message or actions aligned with God’s truth? What criteria do you use to evaluate the authenticity of spiritual leaders?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. How does Peter describe the character and lifestyle of false teachers?
• What kind of promises do false teachers make? What would the consequences of believing in their promises be?
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• Are there aspects of the false teachers’ behavior or teachings that surprised you or that you hadn’t considered before? What types of promises or actions do you think you’re most susceptible to believing in?
• Reflect on the warning from Psalm 1:1 to be cautious of individuals displaying behaviors of despising and blaspheming. How can this biblical wisdom guide your interactions and relationships with others, especially in the context of discerning false teachings?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• Are there areas where greed might be subtly influencing your decisions or actions? How can you guard your heart against the deceitfulness of greed and align yourself with God’s values?
• In what practical ways can you cultivate a Spirit-led life rather than merely appearing godly on the surface?
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Ask God to give you wisdom and discernment to recognize and reject those ‘teachers’ who indulge in fleshly desires, or present a counterfeit gospel that deceives its hearers. Request from God to have the strength and courage to stand up for the Truth, and to help you to be still before Him and know that He is God. Praise Him for there is no one like Him.
• Pray for the universal church to be protected and that false teachers would be exposed for their trickery and their deceptive ministries be brought to justice. Thank God that the true gospel is revealed to us in the Scriptures and pray that your eyes will be opened to appreciate and understand the wonderful truths in His Word and heed its warnings. Take this time to ask God to help you have the discipline to study the Scriptures so that you may be ready to give a clear and accurate answer for the hope you have.
