Radical Measures for a Life of Discipleship

Jesus emphasized the need for radical measures to address sin, highlighting the seriousness with which He viewed it. This Sunday, Pastor Joseph Ouano reminds us that true discipleship involves taking sin seriously so we can protect the faith of others, guard our own hearts, and submit to God’s purifying work.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share a time when someone’s example (good or bad) influenced your trust or view of God. What did you learn from that experience?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. What does Jesus mean when He warns against causing the “little ones” to stumble? Why is this so serious in God’s eyes?
– How does the image of salt and fire in vv.49-50 relate to God’s purifying work and our covenant relationship with Him?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– What are the things, habits, or attitudes in your life that compete with your trust and surrender to Jesus?
– How do you usually respond when God’s refining work feels uncomfortable or painful? What might He be teaching you about yourself and Himself through it?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– What radical measure might God be calling you to take to guard your heart and remove sin’s influence in your life?
– Reflect on how your attitude, words, or actions may have caused others to doubt or struggle in their faith. What’s one step you can take this week to protect or strengthen someone else’s faith in Jesus?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Lord Jesus for His deep love and holy call to live as true disciples—set apart for His purposes. Thank Him for the gift of conviction that protects us from sin and draws us closer to His heart. Rejoice that He refines us not to destroy us, but to make us whole, faithful, and fruitful in His Kingdom. Thank Him for the covenant of grace that keeps us secure even as He purifies us.
– Repent for taking sin lightly or for living in ways that have caused others to question God’s goodness. Ask forgiveness for the times you’ve clung to attitudes, habits, or relationships that keep you from fully trusting Jesus. Pray for the humility to submit to His refining fire—welcoming His correction, surrendering your pride, and allowing Him to restore purity, peace, and faithfulness in your heart.
