1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Looking back, what is one thing you now appreciate about your parents that you might not have valued before?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. How does the Bible connect wisdom with both knowledge and love? Why is wisdom from the Lord different from knowledge alone?
• What does it mean biblically to “honor” your parents beyond outward obedience or financial support?
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• Do your words and actions more often bring joy or pain to your parents’ hearts? What specific examples can you recall?
• Examine yourself: Do you truly value and respect your parents as precious, or do you sometimes take them for granted?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• What is one way you can show respect for your parents’ opinion this week, even if you disagree? (Can be biological and/or spiritual parents)
• How can you intentionally bring joy and honor to your parents this month? (Can be biological and/or spiritual parents)
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Heavenly Father for giving us the blessing of family and for placing parents in our lives to guide us with wisdom and love. Thank Him for showing us what true honor looks like through Christ, who submitted to His will and became obedient even to death on the cross. Rejoice that Jesus wore the crown of thorns so we may become crowns of glory and joy, bringing honor first to Him and then to our parents.
• Repent for the times you have been a thorn to your parents instead of a crown. Ask for forgiveness from both God and your parents for when you have disrespected their instructions, caused them sorrow by your actions, or failed to see them as precious gifts from God. Pray that you may cleanse your heart of pride and selfishness, and that you may be teachable in walking in humility, respect, and love so that your life may reflect His wisdom and bring joy to both your earthly parents and our Heavenly Father.
