True Piety

Do we serve because we want praise or a sense of accomplishment, or do we serve out of genuine love for others? This Sunday, Ptr. Nathan Tee shows us two types of piety: one rooted in selfish gain and another that gives of oneself purely and sacrificially.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

  • Share about a time when you were very confident in your understanding of something, but later realized you were wrong. What did that experience teach you?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

  • Read the passage. What specific behaviors of the scribes revealed that their piety was self-seeking and ingenuine?
  • What made the widow’s offering greater in Jesus’ eyes compared to the large sums given by the rich?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

  • Be honest: Do you find yourself desiring recognition, praise, or important positions? How do you respond when you are unnoticed or unappreciated?
  • Examine yourself: Is your devotion to Christ content and grateful, or is it often shaped by comparison with others? Where is this rooted?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

  • What practical step can you take to guard your heart from turning spiritual activity and authority into your identity and significance?
  • How can you cultivate a lifestyle of gratitude that overflows into joyful generosity?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

  • Praise the Heavenly Father for revealing true piety through His Son, Jesus Christ. Thank Him that He is Lord over our understanding, reputation, and worth. Rejoice that He sees the quiet faithfulness of our hearts and values sincere devotion over outward appearance. Give thanks that His goodness captures our hearts and enables us to live a life of gratitude, purity, and joyful generosity.
  • Repent for the times you have leaned on your own understanding and subtly made it an idol. Ask for forgiveness for using spiritual knowledge, service, or leadership to seek attention, validation, or personal gain. Confess the ways you have compared yourself with others or treated godliness as a means to benefit yourself. Pray that God would humble your heart, purify your motives, and form in you a quiet, genuine piety that is content to give everything to Christ alone.
