聖經中的納稅觀 A Biblical View on Taxation

The religious and political leaders joined forces to set a trap, testing Jesus with a question about taxation with the intent to get incriminating evidence on Him. However, this unlikely alliance revealed a deeper spiritual battle. This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung uses this event to explain the biblical perspective on taxes and how this affects us as believers.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share a time you felt pressured to choose between following the rules and following what you believe is right. What did you learn from that experience?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. What did Jesus mean when He said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s”? (v.17)
• What does Romans 13:1, 7 teach about governing authorities and taxes? Identify other passages that can guide how we interact with authority.

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• Do you ever use flattery or nice words to influence others for your own benefit? What usually motivates you to do this?
• Has your loyalty ever been divided between God’s truth and what society expects from you? In what areas of your life do you struggle to choose God’s truth and righteousness?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• How can you practice honesty and sincerity in your words this week, especially in difficult conversations?
• In what ways can you show respect for governing authorities while remaining faithful to God’s truth?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Heavenly Father for His perfect wisdom that cannot be trapped by human schemes or deceitful intentions. Thank Him for revealing truth through the words of Jesus, who teaches us how to live with integrity in a complicated world. Give thanks that He is the ultimate authority over all earthly powers, governments, and systems. Rejoice that you are made in His image and belong to Him fully—spirit, soul, and body. Thank Him for guiding you to honor both His truth and His purposes in every area of your life.
• Repent for the times you have spoken with hidden motives, used flattery for personal gain, or compromised truth to avoid conflict. Ask for forgiveness for giving your loyalty to worldly expectations instead of fully surrendering to God’s authority. Confess the moments when fear of people outweighed your obedience to God. Pray for a pure heart, sincere intentions, and the courage to stand for truth even when it is difficult or costly.
