Life Group Discussion Guide
1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share about a time when your good intentions ended up not being aligned with God’s will. What made you realize it?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. What does Jesus’ rebuke of Peter teach you about the difference between God’s and humans’ concerns and perspectives?
• What do the three commands (deny yourself, carry your cross, follow Him) look like today?
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• In what areas of your life are your personal concerns still competing with God’s concerns? How willing are you to deny yourself and submit your preferences to God’s sovereignty?
• When was the last time you felt tempted to be ashamed of your faith? What did it reveal about your heart?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• What is one specific way you can “deny yourself” this week in order to obey God?
• What practical step can you take to “carry your cross” when faced with opposition or pressure from others?
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Heavenly Father for sending Jesus Christ to walk the path of suffering, death, and resurrection so that we may be redeemed. Thank Him for showing us the true meaning of life through denying ourselves, carrying our cross, and following Christ. Rejoice that in Christ, we are never abandoned but given the privilege of walking in His footsteps with eternal hope.
• Repent for the times you have allowed your own concerns, fears, and preferences to outweigh God’s will. Ask forgiveness for moments when you chose comfort over obedience, honor over humility, or silence over standing for the truth. Pray for strength to reject being a vessel for the enemy and instead choose daily to submit to the lordship of Christ.
