1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share a time when you misunderstood someone because you were thinking of something totally different from what they meant. How did it turn out?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. What did Jesus mean when He warned the disciples about the “yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod”?
• How were the disciples misunderstanding Jesus’ teaching in this passage? Why do you think Jesus was frustrated with their lack of understanding?
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• In what ways have you been more focused on daily needs and going about your day than on your spiritual growth? Why do you think that is?
• Where in your life do you see signs of the “yeast of the Pharisees” (legalism, hypocrisy) or the “yeast of Herod” (worldliness, self-centeredness)? Where do these come from?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• What practical step can you take this week to guard your head, heart, and hands against hypocrisy and worldliness?
• What is one specific way you can live out “faith that is alive” in your workplace, school, friends, or home this week?
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Heavenly Father for sending Jesus, the Bread of Life, who satisfies our deepest hunger and meets every need. Thank Him for His daily provision, for the miracles He has already done in our lives, and for His grace that is always sufficient. Rejoice that He is the Wonderful Provider who never fails and whose power is made perfect in our weakness.
• Repent for the times you have been blind and deaf to God’s work, focusing only on daily concerns rather than on His eternal purposes. Ask forgiveness for when you have allowed the yeast of hypocrisy or worldliness to influence your heart. Pray that you may grow in spiritual understanding, remembering His miraculous grace, and living with a faith that is alive, not dead.
