The God of This Generation

Jesus refused the Pharisees’ demand for a sign to prove that He is undeniably the Son of God. This Sunday, Pastor Isaac Cheung reminds us that a clear-cut sign would have required no faith. Let us worship God on His terms, not ours.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share a time you were going through something and equated God’s presence with blessings or success in your situation. How did that shape your view of Him?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– What comes to your mind when you hear the word “triumph”? How is that different from the way Jesus showed triumph through the cross?
– Read the passage. Why is believing in a Triumphant Messiah problematic, and how did it shape the Pharisees’ wrong understanding of salvation?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– When you pray or ask God for something, do you sometimes seek a “sign” more than seeking God Himself? Where is this rooted?
– How do you honestly feel about following a Savior who suffered and calls you to deny yourself and carry your cross daily? What encourages and hinders you from taking on this call?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– What concrete step can you take this week to practice denying yourself and serving others, especially within your family?
– How will you live and testify to others that Jesus’ way of the cross, not worldly triumph, is the true sign of God’s salvation?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Heavenly Father for revealing the true sign of His love and salvation through the cross of Jesus Christ. Thank Him that He saves not by worldly triumph, power, or conquest, but by humility, suffering, and self-giving love. Rejoice that His weakness on the cross is our victory, and that through Jesus’ death and resurrection, you are set free from sin and made His disciple.
– Repent for the times you have equated God’s presence with material blessings, success, or triumph, instead of trusting in the cross. Ask for forgiveness for hiding your weaknesses and brokenness, instead of offering them to God as a testimony of His grace. Pray for the humility to carry your cross daily, deny yourself, and follow Jesus in the way of sacrifice and service.
