Faith Cuts Through

The faith of a Gentile mother cuts through barriers to reach Jesus and plead for His healing and salvation. This Sunday, Pastor Jared Co shares how faith transcends barriers of race, gender, and status, connecting us all to Jesus.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share a prayer that you’ve constantly prayed over and over again. What encourages you not to give up on it?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. What kinds of barriers (cultural, social, moral, or personal) did the Syrophoenician woman face when approaching Jesus?
– What does this passage teach you about the character of Jesus and who the gospel is for?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– Do you tend to approach God with more boldness or more humility? Identify what keeps you from having bold and humble faith, and if there are any invisible barriers (like guilt, shame, fear of rejection) keeping you from drawing near to Jesus.
– What does your prayer life reveal about how you see yourself and how you see Jesus?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– What is one way you can sharpen your “scissors” of faith through the gospel this week (maybe through prayer, meditation on His Word, confession, solitude, service)?
– Who around you might feel “unworthy” or far from God? How can you extend gospel grace to them?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Heavenly Father for His overflowing grace that welcomes even the most unworthy to His table. Thank Him for tearing down every barrier—racial, religious, moral, and social—that once kept us far from Him. Rejoice that through the cross, Jesus took our place outside so we could sit at the table as His beloved children. Thank Him that faith, not status, is what brings us near—and that He honors even our mustard-seed faith when we come to Him humbly and boldly.
– Repent for the times you have allowed pride or shame to dull your faith—when you have either come entitled or have avoided God out of unworthiness. Ask forgiveness for moments when you forgot the gospel—when your prayers lacked boldness because you doubted His mercy, or lacked humility because you relied on your own goodness. Pray that the Lord would sharpen your heart with gospel truth, and help you approach Him daily with the kind of faith that cuts through everything to hold onto Him.
