曠野筵席 Feast in the Wilderness

Unlike the other Gospel writers, Mark highlights the compassion Jesus had for the crowd, who were like sheep without a shepherd. This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung encourages us to ask God for the vision to recognize and minister to those around us, just as Jesus did when he performed the miracle of the five loaves and two fish.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share a time you experienced an unexpected or memorable moment wherein someone provided for you during a time of need.

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. What does Jesus’ response to the crowd teach you about His heart and priorities as the Good Shepherd?
• What do the three miracles in this story (the food, the green grass, and the breaking of bread) reveal about God’s provision and presence in times of wilderness?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• Where in your life right now do you feel like you are in a wilderness—physically, emotionally, or spiritually?
• When you face your own limitations (in time, love, strength, or resources), how do you usually respond? Do you take the problem to Jesus or try to solve it yourself? Where does this response come from?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• Do you truly believe that Jesus has compassion on your current situation? What hinders you from trusting His care? What is one area of your life where you can entrust your “five loaves and two fish” to Jesus, believing He can multiply them?
• Who around you needs to experience the compassion and provision of Jesus? What can you do to become a channel of that provision to them?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise Jesus, the Good Shepherd, for His compassion that sees us even when we are lost and wandering. Thank Him for taking responsibility for our needs—spiritual, physical, and emotional—and for preparing a feast for us even in the wilderness. Rejoice that His provision is abundant, His direction is clear, and His salvation is freely offered to all who believe.
• Repent for the times you’ve doubted God’s compassion or tried to carry your burdens alone. Ask forgiveness for relying on your own limited resources and failing to trust that Jesus sees, cares, and provides. Confess any area where you’ve refused to follow where the Shepherd is leading. Pray for a heart that is humble, trusting, and willing to surrender what little you have so that God may bless and use it for His glory.
