烏合之眾與精銳之師 The Crowd & The SWAT

Churchgoers generally fall into two groups: the “casual” attendees, who come for temporal reasons, and the “faithful,” who seek God’s kingdom and are willing to contribute to it. This week, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung encourages us to strive to be faithful followers, deepen our understanding of God, and spread the Gospel to the world.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• What’s one group, team, or community in your life that made you feel deeply connected and purposeful? What made it different from others?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. How did Jesus respond to the crowd differently than how we might expect?
• Why do you think Jesus spent time praying before appointing the twelve? Identify other passages wherein Jesus prayed first before doing something.

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• Reflect on your motivation to follow Jesus and your relationship with Him. Are you more like the crowd (curious, passive, or only coming when in need) or like a disciple (stays, learns, and follows)? Where do you think this is rooted?
• Be honest: How open are you to being trained and used by God for His mission—even if it requires discomfort or sacrifice? Why?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• What’s one way you can intentionally “be with Jesus” this week—beyond just attending church or reading your Bible?
• Examine your current opportunities and spheres of influence. How can you engage in relational discipleship where God has planted you?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Lord for His mercy that reaches even the uncommitted crowd. Thank Him that while we were still spectators or consumers, Jesus still loved, healed, and called us. Rejoice that He has chosen us to be part of His team—to be with Him, to preach, and to serve with power. Celebrate that He trains us, not based on our ability, but on His grace and purpose.
• Repent for the times you have been part of the crowd—seeking Jesus for what He can give, but not for who He truly is. Ask God to forgive you for any laziness or reluctance to be trained and used for His mission. Confess the moments you’ve chosen comfort over calling and convenience over commitment. Pray that God will give you a heart that longs to be with Him and to be fully available for His work.
