A Dynamic Discipleship

Discipleship can be tricky because it involves close, personal mentoring relationships, i.e., life-on-life relationships. This week, Pastor Jared Co reminds us that Jesus provides us the wisdom and freedom to disciple one another. The ultimate goal is to lead many to become genuine followers of Christ, all while respecting each individual’s unique traits and circumstances.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share about a time when you felt torn between being with God and doing things for God. How did you go about it?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. What does it mean when Jesus calls the disciples “to be with Him and to be sent out” (vv. 13–15)?
– Why is discipleship described as full of tension? How do you see this in today’s society?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– Be honest: What areas of your life are you still trying to keep for yourself instead of surrendering fully to God? Where is this rooted?
– Do you ever feel like you need to earn your role in God’s mission? How might God’s saving and sustaining grace challenge that mindset and heart posture?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– What can you do this week to practice both “being with Jesus” and “being sent out by Him”?
– Identify a specific area of your life that you need to surrender to God. What step can you take starting today to work toward total surrender?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Lord for His grace that calls us into discipleship—not based on our merit, but by His love and purpose. Thank Him that Jesus Himself modeled full surrender and obedience, withdrawing from the crowd to be with the Father and fully committing to the mission of God. Rejoice that we are chosen not because we are qualified, but because He is gracious, and His grace continues to sustain us as we walk the path of discipleship.
– Repent for the times you have prioritized activity over intimacy with God or chosen comfort, success, or self-preservation instead of surrender. Ask for forgiveness for the areas of your life you have kept from God’s control and for the pride that resists total surrender. Pray that you may trust in the grace of Jesus and be willing to lose your life for His sake, that you may truly find it in Him.
