Giving Up our Rights for the Sake of the Gospel

What logical reason did Paul have for willingly giving up his rights to make the Gospel accessible to all? This week, Pastor Joseph Ouano explains how we have much more to gain when we’re willing to surrender our rights for the sake of the Gospel.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share a time when you made a sacrifice for your faith. How did it impact your spiritual growth and your relationship with God?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. Explain how this relates to matters of liberty tackled in chapter 8.
– What does it mean that the Jews are under the Law (v.20)? Are we as Christians today under the Law as well? Explain and cite Bible passages.

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– How willing are you to set aside your own rights and preferences and become “a servant to all” as Paul did, in order to share the Gospel with people of different backgrounds and cultures? What encourages and hinders you from doing so?
– Examine your level of self-discipline in your spiritual life. Are you focused on the temporal earthly treasures or eternal rewards that come from faithfully serving Christ?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– Identify one person from a different cultural or social background with whom you can share the Gospel. How can you become a servant to them in a way that respects and honors their context without compromising the Truth?
– What practical steps can you take to join the spiritual race and engage in strict spiritual training to pursue eternal (not temporal) rewards?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Thank the Heavenly Father for His gift of the Gospel, freely given to us through His grace. Praise Him for the example of Paul, who willingly sacrificed his rights and became a servant to all for the sake of spreading His Good News. Thank Him for the eternal rewards He has promised to those who faithfully run the race and commit their lives to His mission.
– Approach the Lord in repentance for the times you have clung to your rights and comforts instead of sacrificing for the sake of the Gospel. Ask for forgiveness for the moments when we have failed to serve others as Paul did, and for when we have neglected the spiritual training required to pursue His eternal rewards. Pray that God gives you the strength and compassion to turn away from selfishness and embrace a Gospel-oriented life.
