權利與捨己 Rights and Selflessness

Before we insist on exercising our rights, do we first pause to consider how our choices affect the ongoing work to spread the Gospel? This week, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung explains why there are times we need to surrender our rights for the sake of leading others to Christ.

1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share a time when you had to choose between asserting your rights and pursuing a higher purpose. How did you make your decision?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. How does it connect to the previous chapter and the whole theme of Corinthians?
• Search for Scriptural text to better explain what an apostle was, what qualifications they had, and what work they did.
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• How do you balance the rights and privileges you have with the call to selflessness and sacrifice in your own life?
• Consider Paul’s example of enduring hardships for the sake of the Gospel. How willing are you to endure difficulties to advance the Gospel in your circles?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• How can you use your work and actions, rather than just words, to demonstrate your faith and identity in Christ?
• Create a concrete plan that you can start this week for how you can contribute to the spreading of the Gospel through your resources, time, and talents.
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise God for the faithfulness of servants like Paul who dedicated their lives to spreading the Gospel. Thank Him for the example they set in prioritizing the Gospel over their own rights. Express your gratitude for the pastors, missionaries, and leaders in your own community who continue embodying this example, serving selflessly and wholeheartedly. Pray that you do not forget to support and uplift them through whatever resource God has blessed you with, acknowledging the vital role they play in advancing His kingdom.
• Come near to the Lord in repentance for the times you have prioritized your own rights and comforts over the needs of others and the advancement of the Gospel. Ask for forgiveness for your self-centeredness and reluctance to make sacrifices for His work. Ask God to help you embrace a spirit of selflessness like Paul, and to be willing to endure hardships for the sake of spreading His love and truth. Pray that you soften your hearts to be transformed and aligned with His will and purpose.
