Ritual vs. Reality

This week, Ptr. Genesis Tan reminds us of that what God wants from us is real worship motivated by a deep love towards Him, rather than religious rituals that are empty and self-serving.

Life Group Discussion Guide

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

  • Describe your worship the past week.
  • What traditions or rituals have been passed on to you by your parents?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

  • Read the passage. What is God’s message through Zechariah in this passage?
  • What is the concern of the people of Bethel? Why were they fasting for 70 years?
  • How did God answer? What do we learn about God through this passage?
  • Read v.7. What does this verse show about the Israelites’ attitude towards God?
  • What is the correct motivation for doing the rituals (e.g. fasting)?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

  • What are some present day rituals that we do in worshipping and serving God?
  • Self reflection: What is our motivation of doing the rituals (e.g. Bible reading, fasting, going to church, serving, Sabbaths)?
  • What are our tendencies to lose our focus on Jesus?
  • God looks at the heart of the worshipper more than the rituals we do. What is your response to this Truth? (Turn this into prayer at the end of the session)

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

  • What can you do this coming week to help you have the right motive and attitude in worshipping the Lord?

6. Engage God in prayer (20-30 mins)

  • Pray for each other’s needs and concerns. (10-15 minutes)
  • Pray for our country. (10-15 minutes)
    • Creative and innovative approaches to education in this new normal.
    • Repatriation of OFWs coming home from different countries and government efforts to bring home those who have been stranded in Manila and other cities to return to their hometowns.
