Is the Day of the Lord a Day of Joy or Sorrow? | Amos

By Rev. Jeremiah Cheung

From Amos 5:16-27

5:16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord God Almighty, says: “There will be wailing in all the streets and cries of anguish in every public square. The farmers will be summoned to weep and the mourners to wail. 17 There will be wailing in all the vineyards, for I will pass through your midst,” says the Lord.

18 Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light. 19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. 20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light— pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?

21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

25 “Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel? 26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god— which you made for yourselves. 27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord, whose name is God Almighty.

Amos 5:17 “… I will pass through your midst, says the Lord.” When the Lord passes through our midst, it means that the day of the Lord has come. However, verses 16-17 tell us that when the Lord passes through,  the whole earth will be full of mourning, weeping, and wailing. In Amos 5:18, the prophet proclaimed with sarcasm, “Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord?”

Don’t the Israelites long for the Messiah to come? Do we not often pray for the Lord’s return, too? But do we really understand what the day of the Lord is, the true significance of the second coming of the Lord? The day of the Lord is significant for two different reasons. Yes, it is the day of God’s salvation and when He comes again, it will be the day of salvation for the whole earth. However, it will also be the day of judgment. So the prophet says, woe to you.

Why would the day of the Lord mean woe for Israel? In Amos 5:21-23, the Lord declared to Israel through the prophet, “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not regard your choice fellowship offerings, nor listen to the music of your harps.” Why? We find the answer in Amos 5:25-26.  “Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel? You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god—which you made for yourselves.” All the religious ceremonies and rituals they performed were basically in the worship of idols. Externally, they were worshipping the Lord, but in their hearts, they were worshipping idols. What the Lord truly wanted was worship which poured forth from their hearts, that is why He said, “Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!”

A person who truly worships the Lord will uphold justice and righteousness.  The man who does so is the one who truly worships the Lord. Such a man is also a man who is ready to meet the Lord. The day of the Lord signifies salvation for them, but for the others, the day of the Lord means judgment. Which kind of person are you? Will the second coming of the Lord Jesus mean salvation or judgment for you?
