真假的敬虔 Authentic vs. Counterfeit Godliness

Jesus highlighted two kinds of devotion through two starkly different characters: the hypocritical piety of the scribes and the genuine devotion of a sacrificial widow. This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung warns us against acts of piety intended for human eyes, emphasizing that true devotion comes from the heart.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

  • If Jesus were observing your heart the way He watched the people giving offerings, what might He say about your devotion?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

  • Read the passage. How did Jesus expose the superficial understanding of the teachers of the law regarding the identity of Christ?
  • What specific behaviors showed that the scribes were pursuing worldly glory instead of God’s glory?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

  • Examine yourself: Do you find yourself desiring recognition, praise, or important positions? How do you respond when you are unnoticed or unappreciated?
  • In what areas of your spiritual life are you tempted to focus more on outward appearance than inward authenticity? Where is this rooted?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

  • When you give (money, time, service), are you giving out of leftover convenience or sacrificial trust in God? What is something specific God is prompting you to surrender or give sacrificially (time, comfort, finances, plans)?
  • How can you grow in faith, love, and hope in a specific area where you currently struggle to trust God?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

  • Praise the Heavenly Father for being the God who sees beyond outward appearances and looks at our hearts. Thank Him that true godliness is not about performance but about faith, hope, and love rooted in Christ. Rejoice that He values sincere devotion over impressive offerings and that through Jesus, we can pursue authentic worship that glorifies Him alone.
  • Repent for the times you have pursued recognition, appearance, or human praise instead of seeking God’s glory. Ask for forgiveness for moments when your devotion has been superficial, self-centered, or motivated by comparison. Pray that God would purify your heart, remove hypocrisy, and help you grow in genuine faith, sacrificial love, and steadfast hope in Him alone.
