Allegiance in Christ Alone

We are called to go beyond observing religious norms to placing our trust in the righteousness of Christ. This Sunday, Pastor Isaac Cheung teaches us that the greatest commandment is fulfilled in the person of Jesus. Let us pledge our allegiance to Him and His kingdom.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

  • Share a time when religious activity/ministry felt busy but your heart felt distant? What helped you notice that gap?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

  • Read the passage. Why does Jesus respond with two commandments when the scribe only asked for the greatest one? How are loving God and loving neighbor integrated as one?
  • What is the difference between agreeing with Jesus’ teaching and truly entering the Kingdom of God?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

  • Examine yourself: When were the times you measured your standing with God by religious activity rather than by love for God and people? What does that reveal about your heart?
  • Where do you see the struggle between knowing what is right and actually doing what is right in your life?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

  • What is one area of your life where God is calling you to move from agreement to allegiance?
  • How can your love for God become more visible through concrete love for others this week (at home, at work/school, or in your community)?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

  • Praise the Heavenly Father for revealing His heart through Jesus Christ—the One who perfectly fulfills the Law and embodies the greatest commandment. Thank Him that His desire is not empty ritual but wholehearted devotion, not divided allegiance but a life made whole in Christ. Rejoice that through Jesus, we are invited not only to know God’s Moral Vision but to live in the Moral Reality of a restored relationship with Him.
  • Repent for the times you have mistaken religious activity for true allegiance to Christ. Confess the moments when you agreed with Jesus’ teachings but resisted following Him fully as Lord. Ask forgiveness for divided loyalties—when your mind, heart, and actions were not aligned in love for God and neighbor. Pray for grace to surrender every part of your life to Christ alone, trusting Him to do what you could never accomplish on your own.
