大件事 Serious Matter

Jesus considers sin to be a serious matter, and He does not take it lightly when we sin or lead others to sin. This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung explains the extreme measures Jesus used to address sin, because causing others to fall has eternal consequences. Let us guard our words and actions carefully.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share an experience when someone’s words or actions discouraged you in your faith. How did you respond?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. What does Jesus mean when He says believers are to be “salted with fire” (v.49)? How does this relate to our growth and purity?
• How does being “the salt of the earth” connect to living in peace and unity with one another (v.50)?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• In what ways might your words, actions, or example be influencing others’ faith? Are they building them up or causing them to stumble?
• What area of your life have you started to lose your “saltiness” (your distinctiveness as a follower of Christ)? What might be dulling your witness?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• What specific step will you take to keep your “saltiness” and stay faithful, mindful, and peaceable with others in your church or community?
• What’s one way you can intentionally encourage someone’s faith this week through your words or actions?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Lord Jesus for His holiness and mercy that call us to live as pure and pleasing sacrifices before Him. Thank Him for His grace that purifies and preserves us like salt—keeping our faith vibrant, our witness effective, and our relationships harmonious. Rejoice that His warnings are not to condemn us, but to protect us and lead us into everlasting life and peace with one another.
• Repent for the times you have caused others to stumble through carelessness, pride, or unkind words. Ask forgiveness for the moments you have lost your saltiness—compromising truth, neglecting love, or failing to be an example of Christ’s humility. Pray that the Lord will refine your heart, renew your witness, and help you build others up in faith rather than lead them astray.
