Hypocrites and Sinners

Is a holy life achieved by attending church and following Christian customs? This Sunday, Ptr. Isaac Cheung uses the debate over traditions between Jesus and the Pharisees to help us grasp the Lord’s definition of holiness and how we should embody it.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Growing up, were there any “rules” or traditions that felt like fences meant to keep you from sinning? How was the experience like? Did they work?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. Why did the Pharisees create oral laws or “fences” around the Law of God? How did Jesus respond to that mindset?
– In your own words, explain the two modern redemptive narratives people follow. How are they in tension with each other? Give specific instances of how you see them present in today’s society.

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– What “fences” or religious routines in your life give you a false sense of righteousness before God?
– Do you really believe that nothing you do can make you right before God and that Christ has already done it all for you? How does that impact how you think, live, and act?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– How can you practice receiving God’s grace more deeply this week, especially when you fall short or feel unworthy?
– Who in your life needs to hear that God accepts them not because of their virtue or progress, but because of grace alone? How can you show or share this truth with them?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Heavenly Father for the Gospel that welcomes both hypocrites and sinners—not based on our goodness, but based on Christ’s finished work. Thank Him that we don’t have to earn our righteousness. Celebrate the truth that we are fully known and still fully loved. Give thanks that His grace is freely given to all who believe, and that Jesus has already done everything to bring us back to the Father.
– Repent for the times you relied on your own performance, morality, or goodness to feel right with God. Ask forgiveness for judging others by the fences you’ve built or by the standards you’ve set. Confess the tendency to lean on religion or self-made identities rather than resting in the Gospel. Pray for a heart that continually turns to the cross, trusting only in the grace of Jesus as the source of true holiness.
