Heart Check

How often do we see God move and still miss what He’s showing us? This Sunday, Pastor Jared Co urges us to remember that when God allows us to face hard tests, He is there amidst the rough waters, waiting for us to recognize His soft touch, shed our hardened doubts, and cling to Him in humble trust.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share a time when doing the right thing or obeying God still led you into a difficult situation. What happened? How did it impact your relationship with God?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. What did the disciples fail to understand after witnessing Jesus miraculously feeding the 5,000 and walking on water?
– What does Jesus’ response to the disciples’ fear (“Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid”) reveal about His character and His relationship with them?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– When you’re in the middle of a personal storm, what’s your usual instinct—panic, fix it, withdraw, pray, etc.? Would you classify the condition of your heart as soft or hard, trusting or doubting? Why do you think that is?
– What past experiences have hardened your heart to God? How is Jesus inviting you to open your heart again?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– What is one specific way you can practice trusting Jesus in a current storm or area of uncertainty in your life? You may identify ways you can intentionally remember and reflect on Jesus’ nearness and saving power during your week (e.g., through Scripture, journaling, conversations).
– Who in your life is facing a storm right now? How can you be a reminder of Christ’s love and presence to them this week?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Lord Jesus, our Savior and Shepherd, for drawing near to us in the middle of your storms. Thank Him for His gentleness, His authority over the wind and waves, and His willingness to go to the cross for our salvation. Rejoice that He does not leave us alone but comes to us saying, “Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid.”
– Repent for the times you have hardened your heart to God—when you doubted His care, resisted His control, or forgot His power to save. Ask for forgiveness for responding in fear or pride instead of faith. Pray that the Holy Spirit would soften your heart, helping you to surrender your expectations and trust in Jesus more fully.
