The Bread of Life: Broken for Us

If Jesus broke the bread as a sign of His singular sacrifice for everyone, why do some churches remain divided when they observe the Holy Communion? This week, Ptr. Isaac Cheung examines the principles of the Lord’s Table and urges us to remove all barriers and divisions when we partake in it.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Who do you usually share meals and fellowship with? What factors did you consider before deciding to surround yourself/associate with them?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. In your own words, explain the need for self-examination before partaking in the Lord’s Table.
• Some believe that the bread and cup literally and physically become Jesus’ body and blood once you partake in them. How can this passage help you respond to them?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• Do you truly grasp the profound significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and how it is represented in the Lord’s Table? How does this understanding affect your worship?
• Examine yourself: Are you taking time to genuinely examine and reflect on your relationship with God before partaking in the Holy Communion? Why or why not?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• What practical steps will you implement to regularly examine your faith and prepare yourself spiritually before partaking in the Lord’s Table next week and moving forward?
• How can you embody the selfless love of Jesus, being “”bread”” for others through acts of service and compassion in your daily life?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Heavenly Father for the gift of the Lord’s Table, which reminds us of His great love and sacrifice. Thank Him for the unity and fellowship we share as the Body of Christ, and for His everlasting presence with us.
• Come before the Lord in repentance for the times you have approached the Lord’s Table with division and selfishness in your heart. Ask for forgiveness for not discerning His Body and for any ways you have caused harm within your community. Ask God to help prepare your heart and live in unity and love as we partake in the Lord’s Table.
