1. Start with a prayer
2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– Share a time when you had to choose between asserting your rights and pursuing a higher purpose. How did you make your decision?
3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– Read the passage. How does it connect to the previous chapter and the whole theme of Corinthians?
– Name common situations wherein people find it challenging to be patient long and hard with others. Why are these situations challenging? Do you find yourself struggling in these areas as well?
4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– Consider the people in your life who may be hindered by your actions or rights. How does this realization impact your attitude toward those rights?
– How deeply has the gospel penetrated your life? How does the gospel influence your willingness to sacrifice your rights for others?
5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– Identify a right or privilege in your life that could potentially hinder others from receiving the gospel. What specific steps can you take to surrender it so you can spiritually mature and better serve and witness to others?
– How can you practice listening long and hard to the perspectives of those outside your usual circles to better understand what might hinder them from the gospel?
6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Heavenly Father for the profound sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who gave up His sovereign rights to save us. Express your gratitude for the gospel that transforms lives and compels us to live selflessly for others. Thank Him for the example of Paul and the many faithful servants who prioritize the gospel above their own rights. Pray that His Name be glorified through your actions and sacrifices.
– Come near to the Lord in repentance for the times you have clung to your personal rights at the expense of others and the advancement of the gospel. Ask for forgiveness for your selfishness and for not listening to the needs of those around you. Ask God to help you surrender anything that may hinder others from coming to know Him, and to be willing to endure hardships for the sake of spreading His love and truth. Pray that you soften your hearts to be transformed and aligned with His will and purpose.
