孝親 Filial Piety

孝親是中國的悠久傳統。本週,張國強牧師分享了聖經觀念的孝親確實是可能的,但它也是雙面的,因為上帝命令孩子要孝敬父母,父母也要養育敬虔的孩子。

Filial Piety is a time-honored Chinese tradition. This week, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung shares that the biblical concept of filial piety is not only possible but that it’s also two-fold: God commands children to honor their parents and, at the same time, calls parents to raise godly children.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
• Share a family tradition involving/initiated by your parents that you cherish. Why is it special to you? How does this make you appreciate your parents more?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
• Read the passage. What does biblically “honoring” one’s parents/parental figures look like?
• How does Jesus’ relationship with His parents inspire you in your relationship with your own parents/parental figures?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
• In what ways have you shown honor toward your parents/parental figures in your daily life? What encourages and hinders you from considering, obeying, helping, providing, and glorifying your parents/parental figures?
• Evaluate yourself: How does your relationship with God influence your relationship with your parents/parental figures and your actions toward them?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
• How can you ensure that your obedience to your parents/parental figures aligns with your obedience to God’s Truth?
• What specific actions can you take this week to consider, obey, help, provide, and glorify your parents/parental figures?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
• Praise the Heavenly Father for the blessing of our parents. Express your gratitude for the love, wisdom, and guidance they have provided you throughout your life. Thank Him for the example of Jesus, who demonstrated perfect filial piety by honoring and caring for His earthly parents. Ask God to help you reflect His love and respect in your own relationships with your parents.
• Approach the Lord with repentance for the times you have failed to honor your parents as He has commanded. Ask for forgiveness for any instances of neglect, disrespect, or lack of consideration toward them. Pray that you embody God’s teachings and show genuine love and care for your parents, seeking reconciliation where there has been hurt and striving to bring glory to His Name through your actions.
