Recovery of the Sabbath

Recovery of the Sabbath

During Jesus’ time, religious leaders corrupted the original purpose of the Sabbath, which God designed as a day of rest. This week, Ptr. Jared Co explains how Jesus, as Lord of the Sabbath, understands our needs and has the power and authority to restore us, body and soul, as long as we rest in His promises.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)
– If you had a full, responsibility-free day to rest, how would you spend it? What would make it truly refreshing for you?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)
– What is the key difference between a day-off and a Sabbath? What is the true purpose of the Sabbath according to Scripture (Genesis 1-2; Deuteronomy 5:15; Exodus 31:13; 1 Samuel 21)?
– Read the passage. Why does Jesus call Himself the “Lord of the Sabbath,” and what does this mean for us?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)
– How do you personally view rest? Do you struggle with ignoring it or misusing it?
– Do you see God’s commands as life-giving or burdensome? What does this reveal about your heart and relationship with God? How does knowing that God is a loving Father, not a slave master, change the way you approach rest?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)
– What will you do differently this week to embrace Jesus as your Lord of the Sabbath?
– How can you help others understand that rest is not about rules but about a relationship with God?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)
– Praise the Lord for being our Creator and Redeemer, who has given us the gift of Sabbath so we may rest in Him. Thank Him for His loving heart, which does not burden us but invites us to true rest. Rejoice that through Jesus, we are freed from anxious toil and can trust fully in His love and provision.
– Repent for the times you have ignored or misused God’s gift of Sabbath, relying on your own efforts instead of trusting in His rest. Ask for forgiveness for any spiritual hardness that has made you see God’s commands as burdensome rather than life-giving. Pray for a heart that delights in worship and finds true rest in Jesus.
