Discussion Questions

1. Who is the most important person in your life? Where does Jesus rank in your list of important people? How is our ability to serve God governed by who sits on the throne of our lives?

2. How did Jesus respond when the disciples of John the Baptist asked if he is the Messiah? How did his answer highlight the link between our identity and our actions?

3. Are there any “strongholds” in your life where you rule in God’s place? What areas are these? In what way are these strongholds?

4. Do you find yourself, like Peter, responding to God’s calling with “Lord, I can’t”? Share why.

5. What do we learn from the life of David, who enthroned God in his heart?

Key Points

We each have strongholds in our lives — areas that we have not fully surrendered to the Lord.

From David’s life, we learn that as we surrender more strongholds to the Lord, we become more Christ-like, and our old nature, our old selves take a back seat and become smaller.

If we enthrone the Lord in our lives, we will not rely on our own knowledge, education, or experiences. We dare not depend on ourselves. Instead, we will prayerfully seek the Lord.

1. What are you willing to give up to be a true servant?

2. Jesus said that when you live as if you were the least, the last, and the lowest, only then can you be the greatest in my eyes. How low are you willing to become?

3. Are you willing to serve the poor, the weak, the forgotten, the neglected, the rejected, the wounded, the dirty, the disqualified, and those who are not counted as important? Why do you think this is not easy?

4. Do you tend to look at yourself more highly than others? Do you look down on those who are lower than you, those who are different from you, and those who are weaker than you? How can you change this attitude of superiority?

Discussion Questions

1. Why does the writer of the Book of Hebrews want us to fix our thoughts on Jesus? What happens when we fix our thoughts on Jesus? Have you ever experienced fixing your thoughts on Jesus?

2. The Lord kept Jesus in obscurity for 30 years and Jesus completed his ministry in just 3 years. Why didn’t God let Jesus come out a little earlier? How does a life of rootedness affect our ministry? How are you now in terms of deepening your roots?

3. Jesus served God with wisdom. Can you differentiate intelligence, knowledge, and wisdom?

4. Relationship and Reason should both both be taken into account when we deal with life situations. Which do you think should come first – relationships before reason? or Reason before relationships? Why do you think so?

5. What is a ministry of righteousness and how can we serve God more righteously?

Rev. Jeremiah Cheung continues to share the ‘Principles of Servanthood‘ in this study of the second 40 years of Moses’ life.

When Moses left the Egyptian royal palace to become a shepherd, he began the second phase of his life: four decades of quiet, where he stayed hidden from others. We know with the benefit of hindsight that this period of Moses’ life was essential to bring about a transformation that will prepare him for God’s work.

Discussion Questions

1. From the first forty years of Moses’s life, we learned that the first two Principles of Servanthood are: (1) God chooses us to serve and (2) we choose to serve God. This sequence cannot be interchanged. Why?

2. Why can’t we rely on our talents and abilities to serve God? What do we mean by forgetting what we have learned?

3. We have to know God first before we can serve Him. How can we really know God?

4. Why do many people not really know themselves? How can a person really know his own self?
