Scripture passage: 18:23 – 19:7

The Book of Acts chapters 18:23 – 20:30 chronicles Paul’s third missionary journey. Paul’s third missionary focused on Ephesus, where he remained for a period of three years. This is the longest that Paul had stayed in one place.

During this time, through Luke, the author of Acts, the Holy Spirit specifically mentioned several important figures, and we can learn from these people some valuable spiritual lessons:

1. Apollos – He was a teacher who received and passed in the truth 18:24-28

a. The 2 Timothy 2:2 model

b. Three C’s of Discipleship

2. Twelve Disciples Unclear about their Faith 19:1-7

a. They were disciples without the Lord

b. They were disciples without the Holy Spirit

c. They were disciples without Power

When we become a person filled with the Holy Spirit, we become an SOS person.

S – Scripture: go back to the Bible

O – Obedience: one who is filled with the Spirit obeys God’s Word.

S – Surrender: giving in to the Lord

Acts 17:1-15

Acts chapter 17 records that after Paul left Philippi, he went to preach the gospel in three different places, that is: Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens. in these three places, the people responded to God’s word in three different ways. In Thessalonica, some were persuaded (v.4) to accept the word of God. In Berea, the people received the message with eagerness (v.11), they offered God’s word. In Athens, they ridiculed the word of God, they despised the word of God. Let us study some spiritual lessons from Thessalonica and Berea.

1. In Thessalonica, they were persuaded to accept the word of God v.1-9

2. In Berea, they received the message with eagerness v.10-15

Scripture passage: Acts 16:11-40

Paul’s second missionary journey was a new beginning — with a new team, a new helper, a new direction. Because of the voice from Macedonia, Paul sailed off to Philippi and there, three events occurred.

1. Lydia’s whole family turned to the Lord
a. Lydia was a godly woman
b. Lydia was an influential woman
c. Lydia was a leader

2. Paul and Silas were jailed
a. Paul desired the truth, not vain glory
b. People of the world desire wealth, not the truth

3. The Jailer and his whole family turned to the Lord
a. The sound of Paul and Silas’ singing at midnight
b. The sound of the Jailer’s cry for help

2. It is very touching to hear singing in the night, but how can we sing instead of grumble in the middle of the night?

3. What is the reason the jailer and his whole family turned to the Lord?
