Read Today’s Scripture Passage

馬可福音 Mark 14:27-42

Life Group Discussion Guide

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

When you’re under pressure or stress, what is your usual response? Do you tend to face it, avoid it, or distract yourself? Share a recent experience.

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. What is the key difference between Jesus’ response to the situation and the disciples’ response?

What does Jesus pray for regarding the cup? How does He ultimately submit to the Father’s will?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

When you face pressure or difficulty, do you tend to rely on God in prayer or on your own strength? Why?

How do you usually respond when God’s will does not align with your desires? What areas in your life are you are resisting God’s will because it is difficult or uncomfortable?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

How can you intentionally “stay awake” spiritually and not fall into complacency like the disciples? Is there a specific step can you take this week to grow in your prayer life, especially during times of pressure?

What is one area of your life where you need to actively surrender your will to God this week? What will that look like in action?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for the perfect example of obedience shown through Christ Jesus, who chose to follow His will even in the face of deep agony and suffering. Thank Him for His victory in prayer that led to our salvation, and for showing that true strength is found in surrendering to God’s will. Rejoice that because of Jesus’ faithfulness, we now have access to God and the grace to walk in obedience.

Repent for the times you have relied on your own strength instead of seeking God in prayer, especially in moments of pressure and difficulty. Ask for forgiveness for the ways you have resisted God’s will or chosen comfort and ease over obedience. Pray that you may learn to surrender your desires fully to God, to remain spiritually alert, and to trust Him even when the path is hard.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

Share a dream (big or small) that once felt impossible to you but eventually came true. What made it happen?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. What is the significance of “sowing in tears” and “reaping with joy” in what was happening to the Israelites?

What does the passage teach about God’s role in both fulfilling past dreams and sustaining present ones?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

When you look at your life today, do you feel more like you are celebrating fulfilled dreams or struggling in a “sowing in tears” season? How is your heart responding to that?

What tends to shape your dreams more—your circumstances or your view of God? Were there dreams you had let go of because they felt too difficult or impossible? What does that reveal about your trust in God?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

How aligned are your personal dreams with God’s dream of making disciples? What might God be inviting you to realign?

How can you take a step toward deeper involvement in discipleship as a disciple and disciple-maker?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for His faithfulness across generations—that He is the God who fulfills what seems impossible and turns sorrow into joy. Thank Him for the countless ways He has led and sustained the church, providing direction, provision, and purpose through every season. Rejoice that history is truly His story, and that He invites you to be part of His greater mission of making disciples and transforming lives for His glory.

Repent for the times you have allowed your circumstances, fears, or limitations to shape your dreams more than God’s power and promises. Ask for forgiveness for pursuing your own ambitions while neglecting God’s call to invest in people and make disciples. Pray that you may surrender your dreams to Him, trust Him even in seasons of “sowing in tears,” and realign your heart to dream with God for His kingdom purposes.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

Share a time when you tried to achieve something good but used the wrong approach. What happened?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. What specific attitudes or actions in Isaac, Rebekah, Esau, and Jacob showed dysfunction in their family?

What does this passage reveal about the difference between God’s will and human desires?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

In what ways do you see tendencies of favoritism, manipulation, or selfishness in your own heart?

Do you sometimes justify wrong methods to achieve what you believe is right or “from God”? What does that reveal about your trust in Him?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

What is one specific step you can take this week to align your decisions with God’s truth rather than your flesh?

How can you practice fairness, integrity, and godliness in your relationships within your family?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for being a perfect and faithful God despite the brokenness of human families. Thank Him that even when families are marked by sin, favoritism, and failure, His purposes still prevail. Rejoice that He lovingly invites you into a journey of discipleship where He patiently teaches, corrects, and transforms your heart according to His will.

Repent for the times you have chosen your own ways over God’s ways—whether through favoritism, manipulation, selfish desires, or disobedience. Ask for forgiveness for trying to achieve good outcomes through sinful methods and for prioritizing temporary or worldly things over spiritual truths. Pray that you may learn to trust God’s process, walk in integrity, and obey Him fully in every area of your life.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

Share a recent experience where you followed instructions even if you didn’t fully comprehend them. Were you able to accomplish what was asked of you?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. What does Jesus’ foretelling of Judas’ betrayal reveal about His knowledge and authority?

How does Jesus reinterpret the Passover meal? What does it reveal about God’s plan of salvation?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

What is your current posture when you come to God—grateful and surrendered, or distracted and distant? Where is this rooted?

In what areas may you be ignoring God’s warnings or conviction, similar to how Judas resisted repentance?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

What is one specific area this week where you can actively trust, obey, and follow God’s instructions, even if they’re unclear?

What sin or unhealthy pattern do you need to repent from today? What concrete step will you take to turn away from it?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for His sovereign plan of redemption that was perfectly fulfilled through Christ Jesus. Thank Him that nothing happens outside of His control, even in the darkest moments, and that He willingly gave His Son to save us. Rejoice in the new covenant made through Jesus’ body and blood, and thank Him for His proactive love that seeks and redeems us.

Repent for the times you have doubted God’s control or resisted His leading in your life. Ask for forgiveness for moments when you ignored His warnings, delayed repentance, or allowed your heart to drift away from Him. Pray that you would turn back fully to God, walk in humility and obedience, and live a life that continually honors Christ’s sacrifice.

According to Jesus, why was the woman’s act considered a beautiful thing? What deeper meaning did it point to?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

Which of the three heart conditions in this passage (power, money, love) do you find most tempting or influential in your life? Where is this rooted?

Be honest: How much is Jesus truly worth in your heart? If someone observed your daily decisions (how you spend time, energy, and resources), what do you think they would say that fills your heart the most?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

Is there something in your life that might be competing with Jesus for your wholehearted devotion or affection? Or, is there something valuable that God may be asking you to offer to Him? Identify what this may be and how you can begin to surrender it, starting this week.

How can you intentionally cultivate a heart that loves Jesus more deeply so that your actions flow from love rather than from duty or pressure?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for filling our hearts with the love of Christ Jesus. Thank Him for revealing the beauty and worth of His Son, who gave His life for us on the cross. Rejoice that through Christ we are freed from the empty pursuits of power, wealth, and worldly gain, and that God invites us to live lives that honor Him. Thank Him for the opportunity to offer our lives as a beautiful expression of love and devotion to Him.

Repent for the times your heart has been consumed by things other than Jesus—whether power, money, success, comfort, or recognition. Ask for forgiveness for allowing these desires to shape your decisions and priorities more than your love for Christ. Pray that God would transform your heart so that it may be filled with genuine love for Him, and that you may respond with timely obedience and wholehearted devotion.

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

Share about a time when you had to stay awake or alert for something important (e.g., exam, trip, big event). What helped you stay ready?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. What specific events does Jesus say will happen before the Son of Man comes?

What specific commands does Jesus give His followers while waiting? What does this look like for us today?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

Be honest: If Jesus were to return today, are you truly prepared to meet Him? What areas of your life show readiness, or lack of it? In what ways have you grown spiritually sleepy or distracted in your walk with God?

Does your daily life reflect that you are a child of light? Where might darkness still be tolerated in your habits, relationships, or private life?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father because He is sovereign over history and faithful to fulfill every word He has spoken.
1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

How do you usually decide whether something is trustworthy (news, advice, or teaching)? What do you look for to confirm its validity?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. What specific warnings does Jesus give about deception and catastrophes (vv. 5-8)? Why does He emphasize that these are not yet the end? Identify passages that describe what the world will be like before the 7-year tribulation.

What does the “abomination that causes desolation” represent in its historical and future fulfillment (vv. 14-23)? How does this demonstrate God’s sovereignty over history?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

In what ways are you tempted to measure spiritual success by outward appearance (e.g., attendance, recognition, influence, or visible results) rather than genuine spiritual growth?

What voices, teachings, or personalities are you easily drawn to? How would God want you to evaluate them biblically?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

Are you spiritually alert, or have you grown complacent in your walk with God? Identify signs in your life that reveal your current level of spiritual watchfulness as well as the specific habits you can cultivate to strengthen your spiritual alertness (e.g., prayer, Scripture reading, accountability, discernment).

How will you prepare yourself to respond with faith instead of fear when persecution or opposition arises in your community (family, friends, workplace/school, society)?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Sovereign Lord who holds history in His hands and rules over past, present, and future. Thank Him that nothing happens outside of His authority—not persecution, not deception, not even the rise and fall of kingdoms. Rejoice that He does not warn us to frighten us, but to prepare and strengthen us. Give thanks that His Spirit remains with us, empowering us to stand firm, speak truth, and remain alert as we wait for the return of Christ.

Repent for the times you have been more impressed with outward appearance than inward transformation. Ask for forgiveness for moments of spiritual complacency, distraction, and susceptibility to deception. Confess the ways you have allowed fear of rejection or persecution to silence your witness. Pray that the Lord would awaken your heart, sharpen your discernment, and teach you to live watchfully and faithfully in His presence as you wait for His return.

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

If Jesus were observing your heart the way He watched the people giving offerings, what might He say about your devotion?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. How did Jesus expose the superficial understanding of the teachers of the law regarding the identity of Christ?

What specific behaviors showed that the scribes were pursuing worldly glory instead of God’s glory?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

Examine yourself: Do you find yourself desiring recognition, praise, or important positions? How do you respond when you are unnoticed or unappreciated?

In what areas of your spiritual life are you tempted to focus more on outward appearance than inward authenticity? Where is this rooted?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

When you give (money, time, service), are you giving out of leftover convenience or sacrificial trust in God? What is something specific God is prompting you to surrender or give sacrificially (time, comfort, finances, plans)?

How can you grow in faith, love, and hope in a specific area where you currently struggle to trust God?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for being the God who sees beyond outward appearances and looks at our hearts. Rejoice that He values sincere devotion over impressive offerings and that through Jesus, we can pursue authentic worship that glorifies Him alone.

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

If you knew you only had one year left, what would change in how you spend your time and energy? Why?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. How should living with the awareness that “the end is near” shape the way you think, pray, and prioritize your life?

What does Peter mean when he says love should be “deep” and able to “cover a multitude of sins” (v.8)? How is this different from sentimental or surface-level love?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

How much does the reality that “the end is near” actually influence your daily decisions, priorities, and commitments right now?

In what ways might you be tempted to do nothing rather than risk discomfort, inconvenience, or sacrifice in serving others?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

What is one specific way you can practice hospitality this month—not just opening your home, but opening your life?

What gifts, skills, or resources has God entrusted to you that you are currently underusing or not using at all? Where might God be inviting you to serve more intentionally inside or outside the church?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for His abundant grace that sustains both our lives and our service. Thank Him that every gift we have comes from His hand and is meant to bring glory back to Him. Express your gratitude for His love showed through Jesus Christ, who did not merely open His life to us but gave it up completely so that we might find our true home in Him.

Ask for forgiveness for the times you have lived as though the end is far away, choosing comfort, convenience, and self-interest over loving and serving others. Repent for withholding love, grumbling in service, or doing nothing with the gifts God has entrusted to you. Pray that He would shape you to love deeply, serve faithfully, and steward your life in a way that brings glory to Him through Jesus Christ.

During Jesus' time, the teachers of the law had an extensive list of 613 rules that outlined what "should" and "shouldn't" be done. To test Jesus, they asked Him which of these rules was the most important. This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung urges us to ponder how Jesus answered this question and use His response to guide us as we strive to live as His disciples.

During Jesus’ time, the teachers of the law had an extensive list of 613 rules that outlined what “should” and “shouldn’t” be done. To test Jesus, they asked Him which of these rules was the most important. This Sunday, Rev. Jeremiah Cheung urges us to ponder how Jesus answered this question and use His response to guide us as we strive to live as His disciples.

Read Today’s Scripture Passage

Life Group Discussion Guide

1. Start with a prayer

2. Engage one another (15-30 mins)

How do you usually measure your spiritual maturity (e.g., by knowledge, obedience, love)? How does Jesus’ teaching challenge or affirm that?

3. Engage the mind (15-20 mins)

Read the passage. What makes the command to love God and love others the greatest commandment? How does this summarize the entire law?

What does Jesus mean when He says, “You are not far from the kingdom of God” (v.34)? What does this statement reveal about wisdom versus commitment to step into God’s kingdom?

4. Engage the heart (15-20 mins)

In what ways might you be agreeing with Jesus intellectually while still keeping Him at a distance in your life?

Which part of loving God (heart, soul, mind, or strength) do you find most difficult to fully surrender? Why do you think that is?

5. Engage the hands (15-20 mins)

What areas of your life do you notice you prefer a “partial gospel” because it feels more manageable or comfortable? What might God be inviting you to face honestly?

Who is someone God is calling you to love more intentionally, even in small and unseen ways? What specific action can you take?

6. Engage with God in prayer (20-30 mins)

Praise the Heavenly Father for revealing that love is the very heart of His commandments. Thank Him for loving us fully and first—loving us with His whole being through Christ Jesus. Celebrate that His commands are not burdensome but life-giving, drawing us into deeper relationship with Him and with others. Thank Him that every act of love, even the smallest, is seen and valued in His kingdom.

Repent for the times you have settled for knowledge without obedience, wisdom without surrender, and rules without love. Ask forgiveness for loving God partially—with guarded areas of your heart, soul, mind, or strength. Confess the moments you have stayed “not far” from the kingdom instead of fully stepping in. Pray for grace to embrace the whole Gospel, not just the parts that feel safe or comfortable, and to love God and others with your whole life.
